62.1% of new personal insolvencies are in capital cities in June quarter 2021

The Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA) released regional personal insolvency statistics for the June quarter 2021.

The proportion of people entering a new personal insolvency in capital cities was 62.1% in the June quarter 2021, a rise from 61.1% in the March quarter 2021.

New personal insolvencies rose 7.9% in capital cities in the June quarter 2021 compared to the previous quarter. They rose in all capital cities except Greater Brisbane and Greater Darwin. Over the June quarter 2021, new personal insolvencies outside of capital cities rose 3.7%.

The Greater Sydney regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Penrith (31), Wyong (27) and Sydney Inner City (25). In the rest of New South Wales, they were Wagga Wagga (14), Coffs Harbour (12), Dubbo (12), Lower Hunter (12) and Lake Macquarie - East (12).

The Greater Melbourne regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Wyndham (27), Casey - South (23) and Whittlesea - Wallan (21). In the rest of Victoria, they were Geelong (12), Bendigo (11), Ballarat (9) and Surf Coast - Bellarine Peninsula (9).

The Greater Brisbane regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Ipswich Inner (28), Browns Plains (26) and North Lakes (19). In the rest of Queensland, they were Townsville (56), Mackay (23) and Cairns - South (21).

The Greater Adelaide regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Playford (22), Onkaparinga (19) and Salisbury (16). In the rest of South Australia, they were Limestone Coast (10), Murray and Mallee (10) and Barossa (7).

The Greater Perth regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Wanneroo (36), Rockingham (26) and Gosnells (23). In the rest of Western Australia, they were Bunbury (17), Albany (10) and Goldfields (6).

The Greater Hobart regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Hobart - North West (11), Hobart - North East (5), Hobart - South and West (5) and Hobart Inner (5). In the rest of Tasmania, they were Launceston (17), North East (13) and Devonport (6).

The Greater Darwin regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Palmerston (8), Darwin Suburbs (4) and Darwin City (3). In the rest of Northern Territory, it was Alice Springs (4).

The Australian Capital Territory regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Tuggeranong (11), Belconnen (9) and Gungahlin (8).
