Information to provide to your trustee

You may need to provide the following details:

  • reasons for travel and the countries you want to visit
  • dates you intend to leave and return to Australia
  • contact details, including email address, phone number and overseas address where your trustee can contact you
  • income per year
  • compulsory payment plans while you are overseas (if applicable)
  • who is paying for the cost of the trip, including a letter from that person if it's not you
  • evidence if you're required to travel for work.

Your trustee needs adequate information and time to consider your request. If travel is approved, your trustee will notify you in writing.

Request permission from your trustee

If your bankruptcy is administered by a registered trustee, contact your trustee to request permission to travel.

If your trustee is the Official Trustee (AFSA), you can apply online using the below form.

  • A non-refundable application fee of $150 applies.
  • Please submit your application at least 2 weeks before you plan to leave Australia. For urgent travel, call us to discuss your online application once submitted.

When we receive your travel application, we will assess it and notify you of the outcome (even if we don't approve it).

If we approve your travel, we will send you a letter giving permission for your approved dates and destinations. You must take this letter with you as you may need to present it when you leave Australia.

When you return to Australia, inform us at Update my overseas travel details.

When you return from travel

Inform your trustee as soon as you return from overseas travel. If you return after your specified return date or travel overseas without permission, you could face penalties.

Do I need permission to travel once my bankruptcy has ended?

When your bankruptcy ends, you will no longer need your trustee's permission to travel overseas.
