Personal insolvencies in capital cities fell 29.9% over the September quarter 2020

The Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA) released regional personal insolvency statistics for the September quarter 2020.

New personal insolvencies fell 29.9% in capital cities in the September quarter 2020 compared to the previous quarter. They fell in all capital cities. Over the September quarter 2020, new personal insolvencies also fell 30.6%.

The number of new debtors involved in business fell in the September quarter 2020 compared to the previous quarter. There were widespread falls except in the Australian Capital Territory.

There were also falls in the number of people who entered new personal insolvencies who were not involved in a business. These falls were widespread except in the rest of Tasmania and the rest of Northern Territory.

The proportion of debtors in capital cities rose by 0.8 percentage points in the September quarter 2020 compared to the previous quarter to 64.8%.

The Greater Sydney regions with the highest numbers of debtors entering personal insolvency were Campbelltown (NSW) (32), Penrith (30) and Sydney Inner City (29). In the rest of New South Wales, they were Newcastle (22), Wagga Wagga (19) and Maitland (17).

The Greater Melbourne regions with the highest numbers of debtors entering personal insolvency were Wyndham (45), Whittlesea - Wallan (43) and Melton - Bacchus Marsh (30). In the rest of Victoria, they were Geelong (26), Ballarat (17) and Bendigo (13).

The Greater Brisbane regions with the highest numbers of debtors entering personal insolvency were Browns Plains (25), North Lakes (22) and Springfield - Redbank (22). In the rest of Queensland, they were Toowoomba (33), Townsville (32) and Ormeau - Oxenford (29).

The Greater Adelaide regions with the highest numbers of debtors entering personal insolvency were Salisbury (19), Onkaparinga (14) and Playford (13). In the rest of South Australia, they were Limestone Coast (10), Eyre Peninsula and South West (8) and Mid North (7).

The Greater Perth regions with the highest numbers of debtors entering personal insolvency were Swan (35), Rockingham (32) and Mandurah (30). In the rest of Western Australia, they were Bunbury (22) and Mid West (7).

The Greater Hobart regions with the highest number of debtors entering personal insolvency were Hobart – North East (7) and Hobart – North West (7). In the rest of Tasmania, they were Launceston (12) and Devonport (7).

The Greater Darwin region with the highest number of debtors entering personal insolvency was Darwin Suburbs (10). In the rest of Northern Territory, it was Alice Springs (7).

The Australian Capital Territory regions with the highest numbers of debtors entering personal insolvency were Belconnen (11) and Tuggeranong (11).
