Personal insolvencies in capital cities fell 25.4% over the December quarter 2020

The Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA) released regional personal insolvency statistics for the December quarter 2020.

New personal insolvencies fell 25.4% in capital cities in the December quarter 2020 compared to the previous quarter. They fell in all capital cities except Greater Hobart. Over the December quarter 2020, new personal insolvencies outside of capital cities fell 9.0%.

The number of people entering a new personal insolvency involved in business fell in the December quarter 2020 compared to the previous quarter. There were widespread falls except in the rest of Queensland, rest of South Australia, Greater Hobart and rest of Tasmania.

There were also falls in the number of people who entered new personal insolvencies who were not involved in a business. These falls were widespread except in Greater Hobart.

The proportion of people entering a new personal insolvency in capital cities fell by 4.6 percentage points in the December quarter 2020 compared to the previous quarter to 60.3%.

The Greater Sydney regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Campbelltown (NSW) (30), Bankstown (23) and Penrith (22). In the rest of New South Wales, they were Tamworth - Gunnedah (16), Lower Hunter (15), Port Macquarie (15) and Newcastle (15).

The Greater Melbourne regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Tullamarine - Broadmeadows (21), Melton - Bacchus Marsh (19) and Casey - South (18). In the rest of Victoria, they were Ballarat (14), Geelong (12) and Latrobe Valley (10).

The Greater Brisbane regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Springfield - Redbank (24), Ipswich Inner (22) and Browns Plains (20). In the rest of Queensland, they were Ormeau - Oxenford (34), Mackay (33) and Townsville (26).

The Greater Adelaide regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Onkaparinga (20), Salisbury (17) and Playford (13). In the rest of South Australia, they were Fleurieu - Kangaroo Island (6), Limestone Coast (6) and Eyre Peninsula and South West (5).

The Greater Perth regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Wanneroo (36), Swan (25) and Rockingham (19). In the rest of Western Australia, they were Bunbury (11), Goldfields (8) and Mid West (7).

The Greater Hobart regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Hobart - North East (9) and Hobart - North West (8). In the rest of Tasmania, they were Launceston (12), Launceston (6) and Devonport (6).

The Greater Darwin region with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency was Palmerston (5). In the rest of Northern Territory, it was Alice Springs (3).

The Australian Capital Territory regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Tuggeranong (7) and Belconnen (6).
