61.1% of new personal insolvencies are in capital cities in March quarter 2021

The Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA) released regional personal insolvency statistics for the March quarter 2021.

The proportion of people entering a new personal insolvency in capital cities was 61.1% in the March quarter 2021, a 0.9 percentage point rise compared to the previous quarter.

New personal insolvencies rose 7.2% in capital cities in the March quarter 2021 compared to the previous quarter. They rose in all capital cities except Greater Hobart. Over the March quarter 2021, new personal insolvencies outside of capital cities rose 3.4%.

The Greater Sydney regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Wyong (38), Campbelltown (NSW) (26) and Sydney Inner City (26). In the rest of New South Wales, they were Lake Macquarie - East (20), Lower Hunter (19), Dubbo (17) and Newcastle (17).

The Greater Melbourne regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Wyndham (25), Whittlesea - Wallan (23) and Casey - South (19). In the rest of Victoria, they were Geelong (16), Bendigo (12), Ballarat (7), Latrobe Valley (7), Shepparton (7) and Wodonga - Alpine (7).

The Greater Brisbane regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Browns Plains (20), Ipswich Inner (18) and North Lakes (18). In the rest of Queensland, they were Townsville (37), Ormeau - Oxenford (27) and Toowoomba (27).

The Greater Adelaide regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Playford (22), Onkaparinga (15) and Charles Sturt (12). In the rest of South Australia, they were Eyre Peninsula and South West (10), Murray and Mallee (9) and Limestone Coast (8).

The Greater Perth regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Swan (23), Stirling (21) and Joondalup (20). In the rest of Western Australia, they were Bunbury (11), Goldfields (9), Mid West (7) and Wheat Belt - North (7).

The Greater Hobart regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Hobart - North West (7) and Hobart - South and West (5). In the rest of Tasmania, they were Devonport (8), Launceston (7) and Burnie - Ulverstone (6).

The Greater Darwin regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Darwin Suburbs (6), Litchfield (5) and Palmerston (5). In the rest of Northern Territory, they were Alice Springs (3) and Katherine (3).

The Australian Capital Territory regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Tuggeranong (8), Belconnen (7) and Gungahlin (6).
