59.3% of new personal insolvencies are in capital cities in March quarter 2022

The Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA) released regional personal insolvency statistics for the March quarter 2022.

The proportion of people entering a new personal insolvency in capital cities was 59.3% in the March quarter 2022. This is a fall from 61.1% in the December quarter 2021.

New personal insolvencies in capital cities fell by 169 (-11.5%) in the March quarter 2022 compared to the previous quarter. They fell in all capital cities except Australian Capital Territory and Greater Hobart. Over the March quarter 2022, new personal insolvencies outside of capital cities fell by 44 (-4.7%).

The Greater Sydney regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Sydney Inner City (35), Campbelltown (NSW) (22), Bankstown (20), Mount Druitt (20) and Wyong (20). In the rest of New South Wales, they were Newcastle (15), Dubbo (14), Lower Hunter (14) and Wagga Wagga (14).

The Greater Melbourne regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Wyndham (27), Melbourne City (17) and Cardinia (16). In the rest of Victoria, they were Geelong (14), Bendigo (10) and Mildura (8).

The Greater Brisbane regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Ipswich Inner (24), Springfield - Redbank (22) and Caboolture (17). In the rest of Queensland, they were Townsville (49), Toowoomba (30) and Ormeau - Oxenford (29).

The Greater Adelaide regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Salisbury (24), Playford (21), and Onkaparinga (12). In the rest of South Australia, they were Fleurieu - Kangaroo Island (7), Murray and Mallee (7) and Limestone Coast (5).

The Greater Perth regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Rockingham (25), Wanneroo (17) and Swan (15). In the rest of Western Australia, they were Bunbury (14), Albany (8), Kimberley (5), Mid West (5) and Wheat Belt - North (5).

The Greater Hobart regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Hobart - North West (13), Brighton (4) and Hobart - North East (4). In the rest of Tasmania, they were Launceston (17), Devonport (8) and Meander Valley – West Tamar (4).

The Greater Darwin region with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency was Darwin Suburbs (7). In the rest of Northern Territory there were 6 new personal insolvencies.

The Australian Capital Territory regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Belconnen (11), Tuggeranong (5) and South Canberra (4).
