About the role
The Regulatory Operations Group is responsible for operations in Regulatory Services and Education, Surveillance and Enforcement. This work operationalizes AFSA's strategy, delivering integrated end to end regulatory services that supports clients through AFSA systems and ensures compliance in line with AFSA's approach to regulation to: People centric, Outcomes focused, Harms based, Intelligence led, and Strengths based.
As a Senior Regulatory Officer, you will play a key role in supporting the Enforcement Transition Team to implement a shift from traditional practices to a more modern, visible, and contemporary regulatory approach. This transition is being informed by current enforcement investigations, legal advice, and the adoption of best practice models from other regulators.
Working under the direction of the Director or Assistant Director, you will assist in delivering improved enforcement capability across AFSA including undertaking complex casework, process reviews, and engagement activities that support the uplift of AFSA's regulatory posture.
You will also assist the Director by consulting and collaborating with staff at various levels of the organisation to help build awareness, support implementation, and ensure operational consistency in new approaches, and will be the primary case officer for agreed aspects of the team's work program and undertake investigations and capability development activities.
This role may involve occasional travel to other locations within Australia and offers the opportunity to build your regulatory expertise in a national, multi-disciplinary setting.
Key accountabilities
Under the direction of the Director or Assistant Director, the Senior Regulatory Officer will:
- Act as the primary case officer for assigned aspects of the Enforcement Transition Team's work program
- Review process documents to support the uplift of enforcement capabilities, ensuring alignment with contemporary best practices.
- Exercise sound judgment and make decisions under limited supervision, ensuring that actions are guided by regulations, best practice principles, and operational procedures.
- Support the development of innovation initiatives and process improvement strategies aimed at modernising workplace practices.
- Collaborate across AFSA to consult and engage staff at various levels, assisting in the development and rollout of transition initiatives.
- Perform other duties as required to support the Enforcement Transition Team.
- Maintain a strong understanding of contemporary regulatory practices.
Additionally, the Senior Regulatory Officer may work across special projects, including:
- Monitoring and regulating the conduct of personal insolvency practitioners.
- Contributing to systems, process, and workflow reviews and improvements.
Qualifications and experience
- A tertiary qualification in accounting, commerce, law or equivalent is highly desirable.
- To be successful in this role you will need a good working knowledge or be able to quickly acquire a good workingknowledge of the personal insolvency statutory framework that regulates insolvency practitioners.
- Experience working either as an investigator, an inspector or in a comparable technical regulatory/enforcement/legal role would be well regarded.
