New personal insolvencies across Australia have increased in the June quarter 2025 compared to the June quarter 2024, according to new statistics released today by the Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA).

There were 3,179 new personal insolvencies in the 3-month period to June 2025, up from 2,947 in June 2024, which is 7.9% higher than in the same period last year.

National data shows personal insolvencies increased in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania compared to the June quarter 2024. Volumes dropped in South Australia, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory.

Of the personal insolvencies in the June quarter 2025, over a quarter (29.2%) were business-related.

AFSA Chief Executive and Inspector-General in Bankruptcy, Tim Beresford, said:

“Following a modest increase in the June quarter of 2025, we continue to encourage all Australians experiencing financial difficulty to seek help early from trusted sources to assist in finding a solution that works for their circumstances.

“Harmful insolvency advice and debt agreements is a key systemic harm AFSA is targeting in 2025-26, as highlighted in our Regulatory Action Statement. One of our key priorities is ensuring debtors are aware of their rights, including access to free advice.

“Accessing harmful advice has caused individuals to be charged fees into the thousands and delayed the bankruptcy process. Visiting the AFSA website can be a helpful place to start, by pointing you to resources you can use and people to speak to.”

Financial counsellors and registered insolvency professionals can help to review individual situations and plan an appropriate response.
