62.4% of new personal insolvencies are in capital cities in September quarter 2021

The Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA) released regional personal insolvency statistics for the September quarter 2021.

The proportion of people entering a new personal insolvency in capital cities was 62.4% in the September quarter 2021. This is a rise from 62.1% in the June quarter 2021.

New personal insolvencies fell 1.7% in capital cities in the September quarter 2021 compared to the previous quarter. They fell in all capital cities except Greater Brisbane and Greater Darwin. Over the September quarter 2021, new personal insolvencies outside of capital cities fell 3.2%.

The Greater Sydney regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Sydney Inner City (38), Mount Druitt (35) and Wyong (34). In the rest of New South Wales, they were Newcastle (22), Albury (19) and Wagga Wagga (19).

The Greater Melbourne regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Wyndham (24), Casey - South (20) and Whittlesea - Wallan (19). In the rest of Victoria, they were Geelong (19), Grampians (9), Ballarat (8), Mildura (8) and Wodonga - Alpine (8).

The Greater Brisbane regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Ipswich Inner (28), Springfield – Redbank (25) and Browns Plains (24). In the rest of Queensland, they were Townsville (38), Mackay (22) and Ormeau – Oxenford (22).

The Greater Adelaide regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Playford (20), Salisbury (18) and Onkaparinga (12). In the rest of South Australia, they were Murray and Mallee (6), Eyre Peninsula and South West (5) and Limestone Coast (5).

The Greater Perth regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Swan (29), Rockingham (27) and Wanneroo (22). In the rest of Western Australia, they were Bunbury (13), Wheat Belt - North (13), Augusta - Margaret River - Busselton (7), Goldfields (7) and Manjimup (7).

The Greater Hobart regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Hobart Inner (9), Hobart - North West (7) and Hobart - South and West (5). In the rest of Tasmania, they were Burnie – Ulverstone (10), Launceston (9), Devonport (4) and North East (4).

The Greater Darwin regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Palmerston (12), Darwin Suburbs (6) and Darwin City (5). In the rest of Northern Territory, there were 6 new personal insolvencies.

The Australian Capital Territory regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Belconnen (11), Tuggeranong (9) and Gungahlin (6).
