New, non-transitional registrations on the PPSR

PPSR searches

There were 2,114,242 searches conducted on the PPSR in the March quarter 2017. This represents a year-on-year increase of more than 145,000 searches (or 7.4%) compared to the March quarter 2016, when there were 1,968,953 searches on the PPSR.

The number of searches conducted on the PPSR in the March quarter 2017 rose 1.5% compared to the December quarter 2016, after falling in the previous two consecutive quarters.

PPSR registrations

There were 485,419 non-transitional registrations created on the PPSR in the March quarter 2017. The number of non-transitional registrations created fell 1.6% in the March quarter 2017 compared to the March quarter 2016, when there were 493,302 non-transitional registrations created. The number of non-transitional registrations created in the March quarter 2017 fell 5.2% compared to the December quarter 2016.  

In the March quarter 2017, there were 253,808 amendments to registrations. This is down 48.1% from 489,089 in the December quarter 2016 (this indicator is subject to high variability). In the March quarter 2017, 348,369 registrations were discharged or removed from the PPSR.

Motor vehicles are the most common type of collateral class of registrations on the PPSR. At 31 March 2017, there were 4,625,321 current registrations on the PPSR with a motor vehicle collateral class. This was 49.3% of total current registrations. This proportion is down in year-on-year terms from 50.3% at 31 March 2016, and fell slightly from 49.5% at 31 December 2016.

Commercial property is the most common type of collateral. At 31 March 2017, 6,958,337 current registrations on the PPSR (or 74.2% of total current registrations) were of this collateral type.
