About the Role

The Senior Legal Support Officer plays a key role in enabling the effective operation of AFSA’s Legal Division by delivering high-level legal administrative and practice management support.

Working closely with the Executive Officer, legal professionals, and stakeholders across the agency, the role ensures systems, governance processes, and workflows operate efficiently and meet organisational standards.

The position contributes to quality assurance, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen legal service delivery and support informed decision-making.

Through proactive coordination and strong judgement, the role enhances the division’s capability to manage complex workloads and deliver consistent, high-quality outcomes.

Key Accountabilities

Under the direction of the Executive Officer, you will:

  • Provide high-level legal administrative support including document management, record keeping, database management and workforce coordination
  • Maintain oversight of the legal practice management system, undertaking audits, quality assurance activities and preparing reports for senior leaders
  • Draft internal governance documents such as procedures and guidelines, along with a range of internal and external communications
  • Manage shared mailboxes, triage enquiries, respond to clients and escalate complex matters as required
  • Identify and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Legal Division.

All duties will be performed in accordance with:  

  • the APS Values, Code of Conduct and Employment Principles  
  • WHS obligations, taking responsibility for own health and safety and that of others  

AFSA’s risk management framework and relevant legislation, including guiding others to identify and mitigate foreseeable risks.

What we’re looking for / Qualifications

We are seeking a capable and proactive professional who can operate with a high level of autonomy and judgement. You will bring:

  • Demonstrated experience providing high-level legal administrative or practice management support, ideally in a government or complex organisational environment
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, coordinate workflows, and deliver accurate, timely outcomes
  • Well-developed communication skills, including the ability to draft clear, concise governance documentation, reports, and correspondence
  • Experience supporting governance, quality assurance, audit, or reporting activities, with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Sound judgement, with the ability to identify risks, solve problems, and contribute to improving systems and processes
  • Strong digital capability, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn new systems
  • A collaborative approach, with the ability to work effectively with legal and non-legal stakeholders and support others to meet practice management requirements.
