Personal Property Security Register usage up as businesses look to protect themselves from financial risk

Statistics for the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) December quarter 2023 released today by the Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA) show an increase in both searches and registrations.

PPSR searches

There were 3,077,122 searches conducted on the PPSR in the December quarter 2023. This was an increase of 8.5% compared to the December quarter 2022, when there were 2,836,598 searches on the PPSR.

Motor vehicle searches by serial number were the most common type in the December quarter 2023. They accounted for 53.1% of searches.

PPSR registrations

There were 549,591 registrations created on the PPSR in the December quarter 2023. This number rose by 9.0% compared to the December quarter 2022, when there were 504,137 registrations created.

In the December quarter 2023, there were 354,197 amendments to registrations on the PPSR. There were 391,304 registrations discharged or removed from the PPSR.

As at 31 December 2023, there were 10,386,116 current registrations on the PPSR. Motor vehicle was the most common collateral class with 4,865,290 registrations. This represented 46.8% of total current registrations.

Commercial property was the most common type of collateral. As at 31 December 2023, 8,235,993 current registrations on the PPSR were of this collateral type. This accounted for 79.3% of total current registrations.
