Personal insolvency activity

Greater Melbourne

The number of debtors who entered a personal insolvency in Greater Melbourne fell 1.4% in the December quarter 2016 compared to the September quarter 2016. The main contributor to the fall was Tullamarine - Broadmeadows.

Noting that small numbers can exaggerate percentage changes, the largest quarterly movements (in percentage terms) in the December quarter 2016 compared to the September quarter 2016 were:

  • Whitehorse – West had the biggest rise in new debtors
  • Keilor had the biggest fall.

The regions with the highest number of new debtors in the December quarter 2016 were:

  • Wyndham (91 debtors)
  • Melton - Bacchus Marsh (54 debtors)
  • Casey - South (52 debtors).

These regions had higher proportions of debtors in the adult population than the Greater Melbourne average in the December quarter 2016.

The region with the highest proportion of debtors in the adult population in Greater Melbourne in the December quarter 2016 was Cardinia.

Rest of Vic

The number of debtors who entered a personal insolvency in rest of Vic in the December quarter 2016 fell 7.7% compared to the September quarter 2016. The main contributor to the fall was Ballarat.

Noting that small numbers can exaggerate percentage changes, the largest quarterly movements (in percentage terms) in the December quarter 2016 compared to the September quarter 2016 were:

  • Heathcote - Castlemaine - Kyneton had the biggest rise in new debtors
  • Maryborough - Pyrenees had the biggest fall.

The regions with the highest number of new debtors in the December quarter 2016 were:

  • Geelong (56 debtors)
  • Ballarat (29 debtors)
  • Wodonga - Alpine (26 debtors).

All of these regions had higher proportions of debtors in the adult population than the rest of Vic average in the December quarter 2016.

The region with the highest proportion of debtors in the adult population in rest of Vic in the December quarter 2016 was Moira.

Business related personal insolvencies

Greater Melbourne

The number of debtors who entered a business related personal insolvency in Greater Melbourne fell 13.9% in the December quarter 2016 compared to the September quarter 2016. The main contributor to the fall was Knox.

The regions with the highest number of debtors who entered a business related personal insolvency in the December quarter 2016 were:

  • Yarra Ranges (10 debtors)
  • Melton - Bacchus Marsh (9 debtors)
  • Mornington Peninsula (9 debtors).

Rest of Vic

The number of debtors who entered a business related personal insolvency in rest of Vic fell 16.3% in the December quarter 2016 compared to the September quarter 2016. The main contributor to the fall was Gippsland - South West.

The regions with the highest number of debtors who entered a business related personal insolvency in the December quarter 2016 were:

  • Geelong (11 debtors)
  • Warrnambool - Otway Ranges (7 debtors)
  • Ballarat (6 debtors)
  • Surf Coast - Bellarine Peninsula (6 debtors)
  • Wodonga – Alpine (6 debtors).
