Personal insolvency activity

Greater Hobart

The number of debtors who entered a personal insolvency in Greater Hobart fell 7.2% in the March quarter 2017 compared to the December quarter 2016. The biggest contribution to this fall was in Brighton (with a fall of seven debtors from the previous quarter).

Noting that small numbers can exaggerate percentage changes, the largest quarterly movements (in percentage terms) in the March quarter 2017 compared to the December quarter 2016 were:

  • Hobart - South and West had the biggest rise in new debtors
  • Brighton had the biggest fall (after recording the largest rise in the previous quarter).

The regions with the highest number of new debtors in the March quarter 2017 were:

  • Hobart - North West (24 debtors)
  • Hobart - North East (13 debtors)
  • Hobart Inner (10 debtors).

Of these, only Hobart - North West had a higher proportion of debtors in the adult population than the Greater Hobart average in the March quarter 2017. This region also had the highest proportion of debtors in the adult population in Greater Hobart in the March quarter 2017.

Rest of Tas

The number of debtors who entered a personal insolvency in rest of Tas rose by 35.5% in the March quarter 2017 compared to the December quarter 2016. The main contributor to the rise was Launceston (with a rise of 16 debtors from the previous quarter).

Noting that small numbers can exaggerate percentage changes, the largest quarterly movements (in percentage terms) in the March quarter 2017 compared to the December quarter 2016 were:

  • Launceston had the biggest rise in new debtors
  • Meander Valley - West Tamar had the biggest fall.

The regions with the highest number of new debtors in the March quarter 2017 were:

  • Launceston (37 debtors)
  • Burnie - Ulverstone (24 debtors)
  • Devonport (20 debtors).

All of these regions had higher proportions of debtors in the adult population than the rest of Tas average in the March quarter 2017.

The region with the highest proportion of debtors in the adult population in rest of Tas in the March quarter 2017 was West Coast.

Business related personal insolvencies

The number of debtors who entered a business related personal insolvency in Tasmania remained static at 28 debtors in the March quarter 2017 compared to the December quarter 2016.
