Personal insolvency activity

Greater Hobart

The number of debtors who entered a personal insolvency in Greater Hobart fell 10.4% in the December quarter 2016 compared to the September quarter 2016.

Noting that small numbers can exaggerate percentage changes, the largest quarterly movements (in percentage terms) in the December quarter 2016 compared to the September quarter 2016 were:

  • Brighton had the biggest rise in new debtors
  • Sorell - Dodges Ferry had the biggest fall.

The regions with the highest number of new debtors in the December quarter 2016 were:

  • Hobart - North West (20 debtors)
  • Hobart - North East (17 debtors)
  • Brighton (12 debtors).

These regions had higher proportions of debtors in the adult population than the Greater Hobart average in the December quarter 2016.

The region with the highest proportion of debtors in the adult population in Greater Hobart in the December quarter 2016 was Brighton.

Rest of Tas

The number of debtors who entered a personal insolvency in rest of Tas fell 26.8% in the December quarter 2016 compared to the September quarter 2016. The main contributor to the fall was Launceston.

Noting that small numbers can exaggerate percentage changes, the largest quarterly movements (in percentage terms) in the December quarter 2016 compared to the September quarter 2016 were:

  • North East had the biggest rise in new debtors
  • Huon - Bruny Island and Central Highlands had the biggest fall.

The regions with the highest number of new debtors in the December quarter 2016 were:

  • Burnie - Ulverstone (23 debtors)
  • Launceston (21 debtors)
  • North East (15 debtors).

Burnie - Ulverstone and North East had higher proportions of debtors in the adult population than the rest of Tas average in the December quarter 2016.

The region with the highest proportion of debtors in the adult population in rest of Tas in the December quarter 2016 was Burnie - Ulverstone.

Business related personal insolvencies

The number of debtors who entered a business related personal insolvency in Tasmania fell by a single debtor in the December quarter 2016 compared to the September quarter 2016. In the December quarter 2016, there were 28 debtors who entered a business related personal insolvency in Tasmania.
