Personal insolvency activity

Greater Adelaide

The number of debtors who entered a personal insolvency in Greater Adelaide rose by 12.6% in the March quarter 2017 compared to the December quarter 2016. The biggest contribution to this rise was in Marion (with an increase of eight debtors from the previous quarter).

Noting that small numbers can exaggerate percentage changes, the largest quarterly movements (in percentage terms) in the March quarter 2017 compared to the December quarter 2016 were:

  • Norwood - Payneham - St Peters had the biggest rise in new debtors
  • Adelaide Hills had the biggest fall.

The regions with the highest number of new debtors in the March quarter 2017 were:

  • Onkaparinga (60 debtors)
  • Salisbury (55 debtors)
  • Playford (48 debtors).

The above regions had higher proportions of debtors in the adult population than the Greater Adelaide average in the March quarter 2017.

For the second consecutive quarter, the region with the highest proportion of debtors in the adult population in Greater Adelaide in the March quarter 2017 was Playford.

Rest of SA

The number of debtors who entered a personal insolvency in rest of SA rose 51.0% in the March quarter 2017 compared to the December quarter 2016.  The biggest contribution to this rise was in Murray and Mallee (with an increase of 24 debtors from the previous quarter).

Noting that small numbers can exaggerate percentage changes, the largest quarterly movements (in percentage terms) in the March quarter 2017 compared to the December quarter 2016 were:

  • Murray and Mallee had the biggest rise in new debtors
  • Fleurieu - Kangaroo Island had the biggest fall.

The regions with the highest number of new debtors in the March quarter 2017 were:

  • Murray and Mallee (35 new debtors)
  • Limestone Coast (27 debtors)
  • Eyre Peninsula and South West (22 debtors).

The above regions had higher proportions of debtors in the adult population than the rest of SA average in the March quarter 2017.

The region with the highest proportion of debtors in the adult population in rest of SA in the March quarter 2017 was Murray and Mallee.

Business related personal insolvencies

Greater Adelaide

The number of debtors who entered a business related personal insolvency in Greater Adelaide rose 9.8% in the March quarter 2017 compared to the December quarter 2016.

The regions with the highest number of debtors who entered a business related personal insolvency in the March quarter 2017 were:

  • Onkaparinga (10 debtors)
  • Charles Sturt (nine debtors)
  • Playford (five debtors)
  • Salisbury (five debtors)
  • Tea Tree Gully (five debtors).

Rest of SA

Noting that small numbers can exaggerate percentage changes, the number of debtors who entered a business related personal insolvency in rest of SA rose 108.3% (from a base of 12 debtors) in the March quarter 2017 compared to the December quarter 2016.  

The regions with the highest number of debtors who entered a business related personal insolvency in the March quarter 2017 were:

  • Murray and Mallee (seven debtors)
  • Limestone Coast (seven debtors)
  • Lower North (four debtors).
