Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) statistics for the December quarter 2016

PPSR searches

There were 2,082,567 searches conducted on the PPSR in the December quarter 2016. This represents a year-on-year increase of almost 125,000 searches compared to the December quarter 2015, when there were 1,957,835 searches on the PPSR. The number of searches conducted on the PPSR in the December quarter 2016 fell 4.0% compared to the September quarter 2016.

PPSR registrations

There were 512,127 non-transitional registrations created on the PPSR in the December quarter 2016. The number of non-transitional registrations created fell 3.2% in the December quarter 2016 compared to the December quarter 2015, when there were 528,834 non-transitional registrations created. The number of non-transitional registrations created in the December quarter 2016 fell 4.6% compared to the September quarter 2016. 

In the December quarter 2016, there were 489,089 amendments to registrations. This is up 80.3% from 271,250 in the September quarter 2016 (this indicator is subject to high variability). In the December quarter 2016, 357,822 registrations were discharged or removed from the PPSR.

Motor vehicles are the most common type of collateral class of registrations on the PPSR. As at 31 December 2016, there were 4,580,033 current registrations on the PPSR with a motor vehicle collateral class. This was 49.5% of total current registrations. This proportion did not change from September quarter 2016, and is slightly down from 50.3% in the  December quarter 2015.

Commercial property is the most common type of collateral. As at 31 December 2016, 6,851,500 current registrations on the PPSR (or 74.0% of total current registrations) were of this collateral type.
