AFSA celebrates GovHack 2019

""

On Saturday 9 November, the 2019 GovHack Red Carpet Awards were celebrated at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra. AFSA’s Chief Economist and Statistician, River Paul, attended the ceremony and spoke about AFSA’s experience as a GovHack sponsor.

‘AFSA has been a proud sponsor of GovHack for four years now,’ Ms Paul said.

‘GovHack gives us the opportunity to share our data and engage with a broad range of people who are passionate about data—and using data to solve problems and improve lives.’

‘This year we challenged GovHack participants to help us predict income and assets when people become bankrupt. The challenge winner—Bankrupt or Not—developed a tool to help us check the value of income and assets, using data from AFSA and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). The tool is easy to use and we’ll be able to build on it over time,’ Ms Paul said.

The runner-up this year was Bankruptcy Prediction, a team that developed an approach to predicting income and assets over a three year period. Their concept demonstrated an approach to validate data with very accurate predictions.

An honourable mention was given to Apex Solutions which developed a tool to predict an individual’s likelihood of bankruptcy, together with great webpage and video to show their proof of concept.

AFSA congratulates all award winners and everyone who contributed to another successful GovHack.
